Greetings ~ My name is Gary Canan

and God has been good to me!

I had the pleasure of growing up in Edmond,

Oklahoma (Class of ‘64). I retired from teaching in South OKC.  Jeannette (Childress, U S Grant) and I have been married for 42 years. We' ve been blessed with 3 children and 7 grandchildren (and I still have time for a few hobbies).

For most of 39 years, I've been a teacher and minister.
After college at OC (Elem Ed, Class of ‘68), I taught at Mustang, OKC Living Word Academy, Tulsa, and Caney Valley before coming to the OCPS District [13 years now]. I have been a youth minister for 5 churches across the state (Norman, Tulsa, Bartlesville, and OKC). We directed over 35 sessions at Camp Rock Creek and were houseparents at a home for teens in North Tulsa.
We have been blessed with three wonderful children:
Our oldest son is on the Board of Edcation: he and his wife are houseparents at a children's home near Altus. Our daughter is a doctor's wife and busy mother of three; and our youngest son is an English teacher at NSU. Together they have given us seven terrific grandchildren, grades 11, 10, 9, 8, 7,  and 4.
Back in high school, I was a bashful, naive boy
often teased about my curly hair. I owe a lot of my self-confidence to belonging to Mr. Robinson’s Band “family” and Mr. Rice’s math / science “groupies”.  I worked at Kirkland Drug all through H.S. God has brought me out of that shyness and blessed me with rich experiences and exciting opportunities.
In my free time, I still enjoy the hobbies
of painting, woodworking, model railroading, and photography like I did at EHS. Now I like to work on computers. I am an avid sports fan but I am really into NASCAR and the NHL since we got our dish. Soccer was our “family sport”. My 3 kids and I were all referees at the same time.
